Subject: RE: Farm succession

NE Nebr.
It’s hard discussion to start. I am the old one and have been farming with my son for 13 years. I also have another son that will be joining his brother as co-operators in a couple of years . I have never understood why us old guys won’t let our kids have the advantage of us being there but not being the boss. I enjoying working with my son and we also both farm about the same amount of acres as sole proprietors . I have one off farm daughter who’s husband has his own business but also farms a few acres in his extra time. It is both a blessing and a curse to have all family members wanting to be involved. Parents need to figure out how to handle the off farm kids. That’s the hardest part but not having a plan or even an idea is terrible. Our plan may not be correct but I have relayed to all of them how we want it handled. After our passing we have no control but hopefully they will be closer to retirement that it won’t matter. You have to realize you would not be where you’re at without your parents and they probably would not still be hitting as hard if you weren’t there. Good luck.
