Alberta | Ours started from scours, progressed to encephalitis and sepsis. Convulsions and layed out flat for a couple days, but it did come around. No ears and tail cause they froze when his body was shutting down, ended up blind and a crooked neck walking in circles. Usually calves like that die. I remember treating twice a day with liquimiacin full rate and dex and tubing him to keep him alive for 3 or 4 days before he came back around. Turned him out on a 30 acre pasture and his mom stayed near and would come to feed him. He was about 450 lbs in the fall and we ended up feeding and fattening him for 3 years before he was about 1450#. Took him to the butcher and they were skeptical about taking him because they did not want to get reported, but I convinced them I was eating him. .When I picked up the beef, they told me he would have graded prime and was one of the best marbled beef they had butchered. That made me smile. I guess you never really know what is under the hide until you get it to the packers. | |
