Morgan Co. Illinois
Kinda like what they say about land at a land auction, they aren't making any more of it. They aren't making many more farmers. There will never be "more" that's just the way of the world. Of our little morning coffee group of farmers I'm the next to youngest and I'll turn 70 this year I hope. Lost a Viet Nam veteran farmer neighbor this week. In our township one 20 year old that farms with his Dad, 2 in their 30's, 3 or 4 in their 40's and a couple in their 50's. The rest of us 60's to 80's. I'm talking local community members not counting the BTO or MegaTO operations that farm here.

It wasn't easy in the early 80's starting farming and a family despite what I read on here the other day that that was a short term dip in land prices and will never happen again. Looking back I guess I had it easy compared to starting now but it sure didn't feel that way at the time.

And when you complain about the boomers never quitting and giving a young guy a chance, I graduated High school in "74. I forward contracted corn for like $3.20 and with beans above $10 all the older farmers that would have retired soon bought 4430's and kept right on going. 5 years ago I said I'll never retire but I can see I'm a short timer now. If there is anything left of the world to farm.
