Subject: RE: GoFundMe

I used to be rather skeptical of crowdfunding. A couple years ago a young family headed by a dear friend of ours was hit by a worksite tragedy. He'd been in the national guard and had made friends all over in that time. A few people put together a fundraising benefit for the family and put it out on gofundme--we were all amazed at how word spread and donations rolled in from friends of friends that would never have happened from a tin can at the checkout or poster around town. A few local people wanted to donate directly to the bank account, but the majority of the cash came in through gofundme. My wife helped administer the site and it made it so much better for the organizers--thank you's could be generated and customized, current lists of donors available with a few keystrokes, anonymity for the donors was fine if they chose so. All this kept the stress level at the minimum for the family who received a check when the fundraiser was shut down. The 10% was worth it and netted out multiples of what would have been able to be done locally. The name recognition and ability to share as well as donate with a couple keystrokes makes all the difference.
