New London, Wisconsin | A good friend lent me a car a few months before his wedding, so I had a house key made. My date and I removed the can good labels and dismantled the bed. I hid the bolts for the bed in a large vase on a mantle. How we had time for this being part of the wedding party and doing this too I don't remember. I do remember he had forgotten to lock his house, so I never needed a key. He came to work, we worked together, and announced a break in with a lot of theft and damage. Nobody said a word. Then he blamed his new sister in law. I could barely keep a straight face. She would have been the perfect partner, but I already had one. There was nobody else in his house he just was looking for a confession.
He was also in my wedding party and I thought, oh boy it's our turn. My new wife and I went to the house and the door knob fell off in my hand. Surprisingly nothing else seemed to have been affected. Maybe a consequence of being older at the time. Or just too many witnesses, probably the witnesses.
42 years together for us, and about 46 for them.
One day way back then, about 6 months after his wedding, we had gone to lunch together and he asked. I don't need to know who did it, but where are the bolts for my bed? I told him where they were.
