If you can't find a deal on a L5P with the 6 speed Allison, I think I'd go gas.
People blame the engine for transmission shortcomings, and the worst thing for small blocks over the years has been the automatic that doesn't have enough gears to make it work acceptably. Starting with the 6 speed automatic the gassers are at least usable without guzzling obscene amounts of fuel.
