CNY | I will say I have not read this book. I saw the Lancaster Farming article. I'm pretty sure the author has written a column in several magazines about ag stuff. This is stuff about US ag while he is living in Europe- just seems kind of weird to me.
There's lots of dairies in NY that expanded in the 80's and 90's and are doing well now. There's also many that went out of business. Sounds like his family had some bad luck/unfortunate health issues that led to their farms demise. I think it's a pretty broad brush to say the ag industrial complex or economy or some other bogeyman caused it.
The Southern Tier of NY state is a pretty economically depressed place to begin with. To me, the death blow was when the powers that be banned fracking in NY. In the early 2000's it was fascinating to go down through there then jump into Pennsylvania. Southern Tier NY was depressed and depressing and when you went into PA the fracking boom was just absolutely pumping the economy up. I'm not saying there isn't downfalls to it. But many farmers in Northern PA were able to set their farms up for generations with the initial money and are still cashing checks every month. Meanwhile New York banned fracking and our energy costs have skyrocketed, further slowing the rural economy. | |
