mercer county, il
I agree. There’s good, and bad.

The bad. I missed most of my oldest boys stuff over the years, working full time, and farming as much as most full time guys. My advice there would be to prioritize your family, and your wife.

The good? I have a good job, but if you’re welding more go back and do the math, the farm has increased my net worth faster, by an order of magnitude. Like I’d have had to have saved 75% of my salary to be where I am today financially.

It’s about balance. My oldest boy works for me, we have a good relationship, but there’s still some resentment there, a lot of it to do with the time, and lack of money when he was growing up. And I’d also say some of the issues that sunk my marriage were due to the farm, but in hindsight, a lot of it wasn’t.

Bottom line? Find a balance that works for you, prioritize your family, and I’ll probably get flamed for this, have a business plan, and defined goals.
