East of Broken Bow | There is a difference in wire. 70s-6 is what I would consider the most common welding wire for most projects, if that makes sense.
The cheap China stuff spatters more for me, and it will also more likely burn-through in very thin metal. I once thought I was doing something wrong welding cracks in my corn head sheet metal, until I changed to a different spool of wire as it would burn through very easily. The good wire at the same setting laid down nice beads with little burn through, so yes, there is definately a difference. I will say I haven't seen a lot of difference between USA made wire, it all seems to be good, and the China wire is very hit-and-miss. I have gotten the cheapest wire I could find, and it worked fine, the next spool of the same brand was a spattering mess. Another thing I noticed with the import wire, the coating isn't nearly as good. MIG wire is coated to prevent rust, and the only wire I have ever had rust on the spool before I used it up was China wire.
If you are just slapping things together, it probably doesn't matter much, but honestly you can buy USA made Hobart wire at TSC, Bomgaars, or Home Depot for within a couple $$ of a spool of import wire, and not have the hit and miss quality issues that I have seen with import wire. | |
