Do what you want on the legal stuff. My suggestion is to take highway 20 across Iowa. Less traffic, flatter, no weigh stations. The west 20 miles ain't so good. I have found the guys that answer the phone at the Iowa permit center are helpful. I have emailed them and printed the response and take that along.
