North Central Indiana
Pretty simple setup here imo. Maybe I’m losing huge money and I’m a grain bin using fool, I have no clue. But bins allow us to harvest. I know guys do it without, that run a fleet of beat to heck trucks and trailers that would never pass an inspection for one month of the year with drivers they find from anywhere and feel good about it. We won’t do that. So we have bins to keep moving, we’re setup so that we can harvest virtually as much as we want to without stopping and we do it with 3 trucks, combine and grain cart. 4 people. Anyway, start selling ahead this time of year for next year. Start at covering fall cash flow needs with grain we can’t store anyway, know our breakeven and how incremental gains over that affect the big picture, reward prices over that with sales. Normally do cash sales if we like the basis. But we will hedge sometimes instead as we track basis trends so we have an idea what the average basis is at a given elevator for our desired delivery windows. Continue selling through the summer but by no means are we 100% sold at harvest. Set delivery to coincide with cash flow needs. Obviously way easier to do when markets are above breakeven but can’t do much about that besides lower your fixed costs.
