What does he have for brothers and sisters? And what does dad and mom think about the idea? Sounds like he wants to be part of dads & moms operation someday. And that someday may take 20 years to get in fully. Siblings, especially younger could be part of problem someday. I’d say if he and wife want to buy a small farm and as long as their wages can help heavily in supporting the payments, go for it. Seems that land and homes aren’t going to get any cheaper. An Fsa loan would probably be in the cards as long as dads willing to say son has helped him farm for last 5 years or ever how long fsa wants that answer.
