Subject: RE: Dairy Steer as a show steer

NW Wisconsin
Depends on the animal but when I was showing a few years ago prime weight for a steer was 1300-1350 live. Dairy was at least a couple hundred pounds heavier. 1600+ Needed to have one damn good dairy steer to compete with the midsize blacks from 1300-1400 lbs. Usually of the 33 beef steers that made our auction you were lucky if 2 dairy steers made it. Usually the Grand champion was a lock and maybe the reserve but after that it was tough sailing unless you had a really good animal.
