NW IL | I agree with this too. If he wants to stay in cattle, send him to a ranch in a different part of the country for a couple years. Learn how to live on is own in the world, make friends and connections that you can tap on later, maybe bring a girl home.
And/or encourage him to learn a trade like electrical, plumbing, construction, mechanic, etc and work that for a year or 2. Can be an off farm money opportunity and brings a skill back to the farm.
In the mean time, another way to keep him connected is to have him start buying heifers, just a couple at a time. Maybe from your own herd. You can lease them from him or charge him a feed and handling cost. Gives him a chance to build a herd and practice the money side. Worst case, if he abandons farming he'll have some cattle to sell at the end to help fund whatever is next in life. | |
