Western Ontario | Mom said to Dad when I was 8 “take that kid to the barn before I kill him”…..I’ve pretty much been there the last 50 years. When I was 14 Dad marched me off to the bank and I got a loan to buy 20 steers from one of his loads, the interest rate was 18%, one died, by the time I paid him for feed and pasture I had made about $800 bucks….I was hooked!! We’re pretty much straight cow calf/back grounder now and have some purebreds too. Our own kids each got given 1 cow and the opportunity to build from there, if something bad happened to one of theirs they bore the full brunt, that’s reality. Both our sons currently work off the farm but each own a farm(the sooner the better as far as I’m concerned) and cattle, they’re learning skills and it’s important to realize that the worst day farming is better than the best day of working for somebody else or you won’t stick with it. | |
