Invest in a great 529 savings plan https://my529.org/ when a child is born. By the time they are ready to go to college or better yet a trade school they will have a great start. You can use 529 money for tools, rent, tuition, etc. Best bang for your dollar. One of the best starts in life kids from grandparents and parents you can do for your kids. State of Utah has a great plan, you don't have to live there to invest in it.

Then next plan is to take them to work with you, work them teach any and every trade you know from running a sewing machine to a welder. Teach a kid to understand and do taxes, paperwork, savings. Teach them how to invest in the market. You will be teaching a work ethic that will make anything they do in agriculture be easy.

Get them involved in 4-H and FFA as well. Lot cheaper to do these things, than to pay for rehab. I'm pretty safe to say that kids involved in livestock or anything meaningful in agriculture don't seem to get in much trouble. As bad as I hate the livestock show industry, it gets kids in a great position to go forward in life and deal with hardships and keep working and be successful.

Bottom line keep kids busy so they don't have time to get into trouble.
