Big Sky Country | Swath grazers don’t worry about water if snow is soft.
I’ve bought eastern Montana cows very much ran “out”——didn’t come in for water with my cows for at least 4 days—and id unloaded them there and left locked in over night
Saw them eat lotsa snow, looked fine, ran them in and they played in it, maybe drank 2 gallons.
Anyway, way cheaper to haul water than feed
Here, I’d buy open and cull cows.
Usually seasonal low, kinda as low body condition as they get, some will be bred, not growing som put weight back on easy, should be able to get out of them gracefully about any time
Eating snow is kinda a learned behavior cattle pick it up faster if they’re with some that already do.
Swath grazers, if gets kinda hard, crusted over swathes, put some horses in—-cows will work swaths fine after they’re kinda opened up | |
