NW IL | I wouldn't do more than a lb of copper sulfate an acre in band. In the UK you are allowed to do up to 6lb/ac per year, but that would be multiple applications.
Fun fact. Copper sulfate was used as a herbicide from mid 1800s until 2,4D came out. It was crazy reading the research papers from Cornell from the 40s where they were doing 2,4D trials to see how the "new" herbicide compared to the standard methods.
Here's what they used to apply:
"Cornell Station advises a 3% solution or 10lbs of copper sulfate to 100gal water, sprayed at a rate of 40-50gal/ac in fine mist. "It kills wild mustard, shepherds purse, lambsquarter, ragweed, sow thistle, bindweed, and dock. Very damaging to beans, turnip, and rape and earthworms. Can sterilize soil!"
Interestingly that rate didn't kill corn or most other grass species. | |
