That is everyone’s first thought. But that hasn’t been my experience at all. My cows grazed through over a foot of snow this winter and we had some pretty nasty negative temps/windchills. They came home fat and ready to calve
The good thing is when even grazing stockpiled fescue without snow cows used probably 30% less water from my experience this winter. A green covercrop through snow probably much less than that so at least will not be as much water to haul as some people are assuming with cattle eating dry grass hay. That being said I've been hauling water to 60 cows all winter with a 1000 gallon tank on a running gear and yes it does suck. But for free/cheap cover crop grazing I'd put up with it |
