NE Iowa | Do you swath the covers prior to snow so the cattle can reach them easier? Down here snow turning to ice makes it pretty tough to plan for any grazing past late December. I’ve been thinking an old manure spreader would make a good mobile water tank for seasonal ground like you’re talking about. You can find them pretty reasonable - especially if someone has sucked the side in. Custom grazing others’ spring-calving cows might be the least-cost, least-headache option (largely depending on the demeanor of the owner). If you’re set up to deal with calving troubles, buying early breds in the fall may be another option. Plan on bottle feeding/selling many bottle babies in the spring though. You are mostly buying other peoples’ problems. Have any pictures you can share of your grazing setup? | |
