The Ontario feeder cattle market is pretty interesting, besides the provincial beef and dairy herd calves, feeder cattle also getting imported from the Maritimes, Quebec, Virginia and the Carolinas, as well as all 3 western provinces. The Mennonites are continually expanding their feeding capacity and selling 20 a week and buying 20 a week is the ultimate hedge. It’s a little hard to sort out what’s going on sometimes, lots of brand new facilities, lots of 230 bu corn getting converted to beef fed as corn silage, high moisture corn or cob meal, pretty incredible the pounds of beef produced per acre, meanwhile there are holstein/beef cross calves going from Pennsylvania to Alberta feed yards.

Over 425,000 head imported from USA into western Canada last year. Another record.
