King City, Mo | We gave up getting bottle calves for the boys this year and got 8 bred cows. We purchased SS-BM for $2500/head average instead of paying $1200/head for bottle babies that have been though a sale barn and likely to get sick.
Thought was if 1250# killer cows are going for $1.70 that's $2040/head, and bottle babies are $1200/head we prob have better luck calving out the old girls who know the program and then fatten them out to butcher. We'll be able to take 3 or so at once in our freezer to retail as hamburger once we ween and fatten up the cows and hopefully have 8 calves. By fall we'll know if I made the right decision for the boys.
Boys are ok with not bottle feeding twice a day. The pins are still setup and I have a bag of milk replacer on hand but it prob won't get used. | |
