Subject: RE: 1770NT question

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
We have a 1770NT 24-30 CCS that we purchased used. It came with Deere's 350 population monitor and the Deere Fold box. For the second year, we removed the Deere 350 and replaced it with an Ag Leader STTM (Seed Tube Monitoring Module) to do advanced seed monitoring.

Neither monitor population monitor is needed to fold/unfold the planter. The fold/unfold box is required and the electrical connections must be plugged into the tractor.

The case drain hydraulic coupler (usually a flat face style) should be plugged into the tractor first as it allows any excess pressure from the Vac and CCS pumps from causing problems. The larger pair of hoses are connected to SCV 1 (bottom set on an 8xxx tractor).

By using a combination of the SCV 1 hydraulics, the 3 point hydraulics and the fold/unfold box you should be able to fold/unfold the planter.

The fold/unfold box is needed. When I worked at L&D Ag, it was common for dealers to bring in planters to have fertilizer and other attachments installed. Since the guys usually wanted to unfold the planters slightly, a fold/unfold box was needed. The shop purchased a fold/unfold box to install on the shop tractor since it was very rare that the customer's fold/unfold box was available.

Both the 7 pin connector and the multi-pin connector need to be connected to the tractor to fold/unfold. The 7 pin connector contains the tail lights, signal lights, 12V power and ground. The other connector connects to the fold/unfold box and is how the fold/unfold box in the cab operates the solenoids for fold/unfold.

One year we were not able to unfold our planter after getting out of Winter storage. My Great Nephew noticed that the low seed indicator on the fold/unfold box was not lit. Since the CCS seed tanks were empty, it should have been lit. This caused us to inspect the 7 pin connector. The largest pin is a common ground for the entire planter. It showed signs of overheating since the plastic was distorted. The pin was discolored indicating a poor connection. Since the planter plug is a standard 7 pin plug as used on semi-trailers, I purchased a replacement online.

Since the wires were a bit discolored and ragged, I cut them back some to get to bright shiny wire. I used a ferrule on each wire. These are sleeves that can be placed over stranded wire to keep the strands together. The ferrule is inserted into the terminal pin and the set screw is tightened down. Without the ferrule, the set screw tends to push some of the strands out of the way resulting in a less than ideal connection.

My advice if trying to fold/unfold is to attach both the 7 pin connector and the multi-pin connector to the tractor. If this is a CCS planter, check the low seed indicator on the fold/unfold box.. Since the CCS seed boxes are likely empty, that light should be ON. If it is not I would suspect some type of problem which could be the plug itself such as ours was.

Here's a ferrule kit including ferrules and the pliers to crimp them on. These are very handy anytime stranded wire is involved.
