Eastern NE KS | The ordeal is over. Calf is nursing regularly and showing playful bouts in their pen. He's got the zoomies. The heifer mother this evening was talking to the calf about his running. She also snorted at Lexi even while Lexi is outside the pen.
The hobbles were relaxed to 10-12" stride for a couple days and then completely removed Friday. During these days I watch for her udder to fill but no the calf continued to nurse frequently.
My next step is to move the pair back to their pasture and mates. While the pair had shelter housing the outdoor run also has 2-6" of now gradually drying mud.
Calf was born 2/22 so fixing this problem required a little over 1 week in the chute with no more than 20-30 minutes twice a day of my time. The pair were at the chute much longer than that but I was doing other chores. The last 5 days was limited to pen feeding after the hobbles were lengthened then removed. The purchased hobbles have been rinsed free of mud and are drying before storage.
Thanks to all who post thoughts on recommended course of action. The program used in this case was quite successful.
