The red gene is dominant
Wrong.
Black is dominant.
It only takes one black gene to make the calf black.
It takes 2 red genes to make the calf red.
That is why 2 black parents can have a red calf. You can't see the red gene in a black animal but it can be there.
To the OP, either your black bull is carrying a red gene or another bull bred that cow.
As to the white face, who knows. Probably some white face in the pedigree of the cow .....
Or I have had respected breeders tell me they believe the Angus bull determines the white face pattern of calves out of Hereford cows, as in wether it has a brockle/motley face or a solid white face. Seems far fetched but if you breed hundreds of Hereford cows to Angus bulls and see a pattern then I'm placing my bets on the breeder who has experienced it.
