Simocattle - 3/7/2026 08:10 That is a nice pair. I guess you can say you are a March calver now. Thanks but no thanks. This is the first March calf I've had in many years and hopefully the last. This one is on me though - I picked the wrong (very fertile, short 48 day post partum interval, early calving) cow to keep my bull company last winter. From now on steers only with the bull until I get back to two bulls. We've had about 1.3" of rain in the past 2 days and 50 degree F high yesterday when this heifer was calved, today breezy and in the 30's F. Could have been much worse. This afternoon I went to one of my grandson's hockey game. From now on we have a house rule: no calving when the kids are still playing hockey! As Mike points out and I've seen in the Dakotas, you can calve about any time if you have the facilities for it. However, I have no interest in a barn or any calving facilities. Wintering in the woods and calving on green grass in May works just fine. This heifer seems to be a tough little girl with excellent genes on both sides, very probably a keeper. |
