Subject: Fertilizer Inspection in IL

In IL, the Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Agricultural Product Inspection collects fertilizer samples from vendors and presents the results of testing in an annual report.

here is a link to the 2025 report: https://agr.illinois.gov/content/dam/soi/en/web/agr/consumers/inspec...

In summary:
989 samples from 101 companies were analyzed and 964 samples were found to be in compliance (*within established tolerances)

I have read the specific criteria for passing/failing fertilizer sample testing but a quick web search did not find this info.

My recollection is that samples fail the test when nutrient concentrations are found to be less than 97% of label values.
There are penalties for failing a test and my recollection is that the penalties are greater when nutrient concentrations are found to be less than 95% of label values.
