Have you ever pulled soil samples on those long-term hay fields?  You say the fertilizer is the same, but that doesn't mean the soil fertility level is the same.  In old hay stands, it is not uncommon to see depleted soil K levels.  And at some point, that depleted soil K level is going to affect yield.... and stand persistence. Without checking it, you might be seeing symptoms of hidden hunger.
