That's what a SxS and a dakota fluid probe are for. No one in their right mind would hand sample zones or grids 0-24". Guarantee 75% of the fields in the midwest you would struggle to get a hand probe deeper than 12" because of the compaction. I've had hard pans stop a hydraulic probe dead in its tracks and lift my SxS off the grou nd.


What the living H do you guys do to your soils and fields? Cant get a probe in 12"? Maybe thats why you have that silly name. Gotta be totally joking. Been pulling 24" samples looking at residual N for 3 years now in our NOPP trials. Heck the first spring the probe wasn't ready and we hand pulled them on each rep. Mind you just sampled each rep not per plot but rocks were our only hindrance. Sure wouldn't want to hand probe many samples of course but it was doable.
