Don't know if you're talking about dairy or beef so I'll tell my experience.
A few pounds won't hurt. Spuds are 80% moisture so 10 pounds is like 2 pounds dry corn. Having extra starch in closeup ration helps with transition and seems to prevent retained placentas.
