s.e. Pa
We have some some pastures on several farms that are steep, poor access, small or odd shaped or otherwise that have been grass forever. They hay is very sellable if its dry and mostly free of weeds. To do this we spray them all with 1.5 pts 2-4-d. 1.5 cups dicamba, and 1.5 quarts of Prowl H20 in late march or early April. I've never left a check strip, just know that the hay is clean if they are sprayed and weedy if they aren't. I have one where the owner does not want any chemicals used. Same fertilizer as all the other fields. The yield there is usually the best, especially in later cuttings, but does have a lot more weeds. I'm wondering if the spring herbicide is limiting growth in the other fields or if this is coincidence? Has anyone ever left a check strip or noticed this?
