NEMO | I'm not sure I can accurately answer that, but I guess it's a possibility. We do it because it's a logistics issue. We got out of a partnership that had good facilities for cold weather calving. Here, if you're going to calf in cold and or muddy weather, they about can't be out in our generally rough, ditchy, washout pastures, the calf and or cow just finds so many ways to get in trouble and it's a time killer. And yes, I like stockpiled grass going into early winter, but that only lasts so long, and like you and I have talked before, no rain last fall threw a wrench in that. The fall calves generally start consuming lots of feed when mom's milk slows down, whether it be at the bunk with mom, creep feeder, or hay rack, just the way it is. And to my friend above, target start date is Aug 15, but a few trickle in before that, done Oct 1 with really not many then. October and later just never catch up, better to take those pairs to the sale and let someone over pay for them | |
