Tablerock Ranch eastern Wa
We implant all terminal cattle, so I see the prime rate down as a result. We see 22 to 31 % prime on most kill sheets which is still great, with nearly 100% choice or prime. I would say no on the yield grade 4 question as there doesn't seem to be a correlation between the two in this group of cattle which is kind of unique when I think about it, we feed for three other ranches that have a mix with many colored cattle and we see a higher degree of YG4 cattle trying to get them to hit the grid. Pulling finished cattle almost weekly like my son does really trains the eye to the point one thinks they have it completely figured out, but outlier cattle have a way of humbling one's opinion of themselves. We see outlier cattle that completely blow your expectations when the hide comes off, both to the positive and negative. The question on terminal verses maternal for us has not been too hard to quantify as we have pushed the issue harder than most cow calf and with the Angus based herd with angus bulls going back on them for replacements, We use growth/carcass bulls focusing on feedlot performance, figuring if we push it to far we can dial it back and so far we have kept an expectable balance. We are running a commercial herd here as well now and we find we are completely satisfied with pulling replacements out of our terminal outcross cattle.
