| Dave thanks for taking the time and sharing your story. I will agree with you on your findings. Having a two herds that started out Herefords, my father in law brought the first black angus in this area. Boy did his peers first cuss him. It was world of horned Herefords here 40 years ago. Same with my father and grandfather, went from Herefords to Red Angus/Gelbvieh on those Herefords.
I've dabbled a little Sim/Angus and a few Shorthorn that I used on my Holsteins when I had dairy. Those Shorthorns never hurt my beef herd as far as maternal traits. We call those blue roans here "Brenda's" named after a employee's wife here that divorced him while working for us. Those blue roans have a soft spot in my heart here.
I think back to the day I unloaded a trailer load of black bulls on my father's red cow herd. I could tell he wasn't happy, but he kept his quiet. The next calf crop put 60 lbs. across the board on heifers and steers. Only change made on the herd. It still didn't sit right with him, but he rejoiced in seeing his grandkids trailing those cattle up and down the canyons.
I'm getting a itch to find a Shorthorn to get me a few "Brenda" markers in the herd. Also got me two white char cross cows who's mother's were hussy fence jumpers into neighbor ranch that ran a bunch of white bulls.
Overall the status quo here is" black is beautiful". Forest Gump said it best. Life's like a box of chocolates; never know what your going to get. | |
