Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | I have a crop consultant that used to work for a coop. His boss came into a meeting one day and said, “boys, we’re going to quit taking 0-12” soil samples and take 0-8” samples instead”. Consultant asked why? You know there’s quite a bit of fertility deeper than 8”. Boss says “yes, but we’re here to sell fertilizer “.
So, since I have hired him he always takes 24” samples and we are applying less fertilizer and our PH levels have improved in just 3 years from low to mid 5s to 6-6.5. Too much nitrogen application was lowering our PH making nutrients less available and the coop was wanting to sell lime or gypsum to neutralise when all it took was applying less nitrogen. And my yields have been the best ever.
