Eastern NE KS | Years ago I developed a philosophy that a 3/8 - 5/8 cross was an ideal. This was supported by the many brahman crosses resulting in 3/8 brahman offspring. And supported by our happy accidental used of a 3/4 Charolais -1/4 Angus bull way back in 1970 on commercial Angus. The offspring uniformlly leaned toward one parent breed or the other. In our case, the calves retained the marbling characteristic of Angus while profitably using at dose of frame and growth from the Charolais.
I don't think today's cattle are as strikingly phenotypically different as the Continental and British breeds were 55 years ago. The resulting 50/50 F1 may be more uniform today.
