Western Oregon | I was lucky in a way. I grew up eating right because of Mom's stage 2 diabetes, I grew up as a sickly kid. I left home at 12 and eventually strayed away from diet some, I ate what was easily available. At 19 I was sick and diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I was put on a very strict diet and meds. A couple years later Dr. said I had high blood sugar. I tweaked a few things and went off the meds and some of the strict diet. Mom controlled it with how she ate. Her doctor put me on a very strict diet for stage 2 diabetes, no added sugar, no sugar in the house, no pop. I had grown up eating good simple food from a garden, because of Mom's diabetes. We had a water cup at faucet right at pump house, Mom also didn't want dirt brought into house so no shoes in house so it kept us just drinking good cool water. Mom's biggest change was no Crisco, no bread, no pie crust. No flour or sugar. She made cornbread without flour and fruit crisp with oats and a little honey. We ate meat, elk, venison but mostly chicken, turkey and fish, lots of fish, trout, steelhead and salmon. I was also lucky because I didn't go to town much, had very little money as a kid. No eating out. All my numbers went down quickly and I started feeling better. I think my diet was out of balance, so restricted, and the meds. I reassess my diet often and try to stay on course. My blood sugar is pretty good but the cholesterol fluctuates, my blood pressure is good. For me it has been a life change, and sticking to it. I feel it has a lot to do with carbs for me, with my blood sugar issues over the years to keeping diet steady and numbers even....James | |
