NEMO | Before I dove into the Black Hereford deal back in 2006 I a had a nice herd of Sim/Angus cows. Probably more heavy on the Simmental than Angus but would rotate between the 2 breeds.
After having true F-1 Angus/Hereford cows for several years now I think they are hard to beat from the 'cow/calf sell at weaning' standpoint. Throwing a Simmental bull on those cows makes a nice 3 way maximum heterosis calf. Plus I like saying Sim-Ang-Ford!!!
Ideally I like the idea of keeping the calf half Angus for meeting industry standards/desires. So using F-1 SimAngus bulls on true F-1 Angus/Hereford cows results in a 1/4 Simmental 1/2 Angus 1/4 Hereford calf. This also is a 1/4 Continental and 3/4 British calf.
Simmental brings the growth and Hereford helps with the docility and longevity too. Angus because it's Angus. Got to have black or black baldies so as not to get hammered at the sale barn.
Looks like what you describe at the end is keeping your herd with 1/4 to 3/8 Simmental and I can see that working good, having just enough Continental on the British to have the best of both. | |
