central illinois | Unkown is just what it says it is, an export sale registered from the US by a US domiciled grain trader to a foreign domiciled grain trader or user. The US domiciled trader may not know the destination until near the time the contract ships. The bushels may be traded again and again between multiple foreign grain traders. Another possibility is that the grain is traded from the domestic (US) unit to a overseas unit of the same company.
US origin grain may be cheapest delivered to a specific destination now, but by the time shipment comes around, another origin grain may be the cheapest source. So the US contract can be cancelled or switched to a new destination and another origin grain purchased . Lots of arbitrage goes on with both the value of grain as well as the value of ocean freight. Even if grain is sold to a Chinese trade house, it is not assumed the grain ultimately goes to a Chinese destination. A Chinese trade house may deliver grain to a Chinese port, but could just as easily take grain to Japan, Tawain, or some other destination.
