East Central IL | We have a low-productivity hillside next to a creek that is hard to farm and would be a good candidate for CRP. It takes a 5 acre square out of a 130 acre field where the farm jets out. Adding CRP would help with erosion, be as profitable as farming it, and it would straighten the boundary line on that side of the field.
The whole farm was pattern tiled about 4 years ago. There are 13 laterals installed in the 5 acres that would become CRP, plus two mains that drain 40 acres of the field. The mains pass through the north and south ends to discharge at the creek.
Am I crazy to consider planting long-term cover over the perforated tile and mains? I don't want roots to damage the tile lines or cause a blockage to back-up water from the rest of the farm.
I appreciate any opinions on this, especially if it's based on first hand experience.
Thanks! |
