 East of Broken Bow | Around here, most of the ranchers are retiring, not getting into farming.
The last census put over 1/3 of ranchers over the age of 65. Young people are not getting into cow/calf operations all that much, the bulk of them buy yearlings to put on grass, or at least have been because that paid better than having a cow herd.
The high price of beef has more to do with 'low prices curing low prices' than anything else. Years of low profits kept the young people out, and now that prices are at record levels, many of those over-60, and a LOT of ranchers over 70 are just cashing out as the physical work is getting to be too much for them. | |
