I think it is a super active CEC substrate, so if applied with nutrients it supposedly increases nutrient use efficiency by keeping nutrients on exchange sites instead of reacting away into something insoluble (P) or getting caught in the clay plates (K).  Like the CEC of an equivalent mass is 5000 meq instead of 10.  But then you get into the relative mass distinctions of a couple million pounds of soil in the acre- slice vs a little bit of high CEC magic spread across it.
