NW IL | Have him pull a 6in soil test test to send to Regen Labs for a Haney test. I found out a few weeks ago they are the only ones actually doing the Haney test the way it is supposed to be done. Everyone else has cut corners and isn't actually doing the tests correctly.
He can note on there what his yield goal is and I would be very surprised if they said no fertilizer is needed.
For covers, he needs to watch his C:N ratio so nutrients cycle well. Ahead of beans the ratio shouldn't be higher than the yearly rainfall average and for corn it shouldn't be higher than the April-Aug rainfall average. Chances are he's got too much rye in the covers and terminating too late.
That said, Russell Hedrick like to talk about a neighbor he helped in the Carolinas that had had no P or K in 20 years and his corn was almost twice the county average, and he planted green with an old Allis plate planter. | |
