Alberta | The calf will not die in a day or 2 of not eating if it was healthy, it knows where lunch is if thats the only dish on the table he will suck, if there are other easy dishes ( young heifers) they may go for them too. I have had cows just jump in hobbles too. If she is not kicking or running away from the calf you can lengthen them. I just shorten them if the cow figures out how to get away. but an aggressive calf they will also nurse between the back legs when the cow is eating or standing. sounds as if this cow is ok with it nursing. I would leave them on until she starts showing interest in the calf. Sometimes if you take the calf away for a half day, you can tell if she is interested when you let the calf back to nurse. s=Sometimes they never show interest and just tolerate until you take the hobbles off then they don't let the calf suck. | |
