ecmn | Since he opened up to you that he's having financial trouble. I would reach out to him once in a while and just see how he's doing. I wouldn't be scared to ask if he's willing to listen to your opinion since he said he's having trouble.
I think the best thing you could do is see if there's a soil health coalition in your area that has a mentorship program.
Somebody that can help him with the implementation of cover crops that can explain to him why these species are being selected and why they're going on at this time.
If he's going to get rid of the tool of dry fertilizer then he better start using the other tool of plant testing. a lot. If he pulls a plan test at V3 and there's deficiencies then you pop him in the ears with your flat hand and tell him he better get what he needs to get to fix them deficiencies.
If he's in the beginning of regenerative farming he should be using normal practices to the area on 99% of the farm and you pick a couple acres to be your experiment on until you get things figured out.
You can't just take all your tools away in year one and two. We would all love to have a farm like a guy that's been doing a practice for 40 years that for the rest of human existence it won't need fertilizer or herbicide or anything. But there's a difference between 40 years later and your first couple years in.
If he wants to reach out I will do my best to find somebody in his area to help him. Otherwise I will see if we can't fix some problems and help him out this year
