Subject: RE: Protection for fiberglass water trough

So there are not my favorite trough, but we have a pasture with them in a series down a waterline. Well is at top of system along with a storage tank. So we have a pretty good flow to them. They have held up better than I expected. They have three wood post set in a triangle around the trough. Then two wood planks high set in triangle over top of trough. Water is plumbed over side of trough in steel pipe next to one of the posts and runs a Robert's float valve to maintain trough.

I grit my teeth over tire troughs, but I think for smaller number of cattle and even high numbers on them and plumbing HDPE pipe in center of tire, and filling with concrete is pretty hard to beat for being indestructible. You can just drive drill stem around your fiberglass trough like we did this tire trough.

We bring water in trough in center, neck water down in a 3/4" garden hose with a steel pipe peice on barb fitting to give weight to keep from hose floating up. Use 1" curb stop valve outside on line to adjust water flow to trough. Use hose to measure flow in 5 gallon bucket to time flow. That way we can set flows in troughs in a system as we drive down the line.

Over flow pipe is 2" HDPE cut down to height, then put a peice of sch 80 3" pvc over it with holes drilled in it. We make a small cable loop over the 3" drain pipe so we can lift it off with our curb stop wrench or shovel not having to get in trough. The pipes have one spot where we can unwire them an slide the pipe aside to let a animal out if they ever got in trough. You can see we welded a horseshoe on end of pipe to give a tie off to wire pipe to post. This way you can let a animal out of trough without any tools and put it back together. You could do the same with the fiberglass tank. I just took old bird ramp out of galvanized rectangular tank and bent it to fit in tire tank and screwed it to tire for bird ramp. Been working ok right now.
