| I'm in an area with a high concentration of broiler chicken production. The most frugal chicken farmers kept sows to eat the dead chickens and produce a litter of pigs for almost nothing. That practice is now frowned upon and the mortality is composted into a soil nutrient. When I worked at Soil Conservation the NRCS District Conservationist circulated a magazine article that she thought was interesting about a new practice of feeding dead poultry to alligators somewhere in the south. I pointed out that we had been feeding dead poultry to animals for years.
My wife's grandmother grew up on a large estate farm where her father cared for the fox hounds for the owner. Horses that were too old to ride for fox hunting were fed to the hounds. | |
