Subject: RE: Can pigs be raised on ground ear corn

Bonanza - 3/2/2026 09:04 put the ears out there whole-old neighbor said pigs can shell their own corn just fine. They wont eat the cobs but just getting shelled corn will be higher energy and protein, supplement with SBM and I'd put a bale of alfalfa in the pen to for them to root in and chew.

The problem with that is that small pigs won't eat shell corn real well and they for sure won't digest/absorb the nutrients from whole shell corn very well.   He's not talking about maintaining condition on a cow or sow, he's talking about growing pigs/hogs.

Since he already has a tractor and grinder/mixer available to use, he should use it.   He'll get a lot better growth and feed efficiency from grinding the ear corn and mixing the protein supplement with it to make complete feed, even if its fed with a bucket in a trough or on the ground.
