Liquid injected into the dirt is much, much better if you are side dressing after emergence. I can't believe how many farmers & agronomists spin on dry urea which burns the corn until the field looks like ripe oats and then say "it doesn't hurt a thing". No, you just set the corn back 2 weeks and opened it up for every disease under the sun. Corn will turn dark green and take off like nuts a few days after liquid is injected. It is stunning to watch side by side fields where one takes off and the other whithers.

We have done it both ways and sidedressing liquid will significantly outyield dry most years. Dry works if it rains a lot, say a couple inches, after application. Dry fertilizer may work a lot better if it is worked in - I don't know. Incidently the damage is not caused by granules landing in the leaf whorl. Mark the granule with a felt tip pen and check it for a week. That doesn't seem to hurt a thing. It is gasing off that half kills the plant and provides expensive corn poison as it vaporizes into the atmosphere.
