southern MN | I have just toyed with a few bags of cover crop in a fert buggy, actually mixed in the side-dress, and see what happens. Corn was knee to almost hip high.
While I saw some spindly cover coming on early,, in the end I saw very few plants after harvest other than any skip areas in the corn. Those few spots had a nice little bit of cover. Think I posted some pics of it back in the day.
It’s just so hit and miss to get the seed to catch and grow with it scattered over the hard mid summer ground. Then if we often get a dry august, they run out of moisture and sunlight at the same time. Probably better and worse years for it.
My very small experience. The cattle did like the few areas something grew.
I think you would be looking to spread seed later, and with the silage getting off earlier and the traffic of the silage harvest might get a better seed catch?
